Formulation principles
The dose, the delivery, and the packaging.
An ingredient list tells you almost nothing. Three things determine whether a formula does what its label implies: how much of the active is in it, whether the base gets it where it needs to go, and whether the packaging keeps it intact long enough to matter.
Short amino-acid chains that act as signals rather than payloads.
A peptide is not doing chemistry on your face; it is presenting a sequence that skin already recognises. That is why they work at fractions of a percent and why the specific peptide matters far more than the total peptide count. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 addresses the look of expression lines; palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and tetrapeptide-7 address the look of firmness. They are not interchangeable, and a formula listing 'peptide complex' without naming them is telling you nothing.
Retinaldehyde is one conversion step closer to the active form than retinol.
Retinol has to convert twice inside the skin before it does anything. Retinaldehyde converts once. That is why 0.1% retinal is a meaningful dose where 0.1% retinol is a marketing number. We encapsulate it so release is gradual overnight rather than all at once, because the failure mode of a retinoid is not weakness — it is irritation that makes you stop using it in week three.
L-ascorbic acid works and oxidises. Both facts have to be designed around.
15% L-ascorbic with ferulic acid and tocopherol at low pH is the reference system, and it is unstable by nature. Most of the industry ships it in a clear dropper bottle where you can watch it turn orange. We use an opaque, air-restricted bottle and pair it with the stabilisers that actually extend its useful life, which is a packaging decision as much as a formulation one.
The ratio matters as much as the ingredients.
Skin's own surface uses ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids at roughly 3:1:1. Deliver the same three lipids in the wrong proportion and the result is worse than delivering none — the surface reads the mixture as incomplete. Every barrier formula in our range holds that ratio, which is why they are useful during a retinoid ramp-up rather than merely pleasant.
Contact time is a dosing variable that nobody puts on the label.
A 10% acid you rinse off after ten minutes is often safer and more effective than a 5% acid you leave on overnight, because the exposure has a defined end. Enzymes go further: bromelain and papain are self-limiting — they break down surface debris and then stop — which is why they suit reactive skin where acids do not.
The best filter system is the one you reapply.
Photoprotection is the single highest-return step in any routine, and adherence is the whole game. A weightless SPF 50 that disappears on every skin tone beats a technically superior formula that leaves a cast and gets skipped. Iron oxides in our tinted mineral SPF also screen visible light, which is the wavelength most relevant to the appearance of melasma.
What our result figures mean
Where a product page shows a figure like “92% said skin looked smoother at 8 weeks”, that is a consumer perception study: participants used the product as directed for the stated period and self-assessed the appearance of their own skin against a standardised questionnaire.
It is not an instrumental measurement, and it is not a clinical trial. We label it that way on every page it appears on because the difference matters and because a figure presented as more than it is is the fastest way to disappoint someone who bought on the strength of it.
